Demise of Sujatha, Tamil writer

I can rightfully say that Sujatha was one of the few Tamil writers I grew up with. I got introduced to his writing through a controversy. In the early 80’s he started writing a novel in Kumudham (I think) called ‘Rattham Ore Niram’. In one of the early instalments of the novel, he described the hero as a low-caste person prompting caste associations to go up in arms. He eventually withdrew the novel.

The things I liked in his writings where his creative style and stories with a scientific line (not exactly science fiction). I also admired his wide knowledge and logical thinking. In modern Tamil writers, he surely has a leading place.

Another Tamil author I vividly remember around the same time as Sujatha was Stella Bruce – though to me he was a one-novel-wonder. Yes, we were raving fans of ‘Athu Oru Nila Kaalam’. I think I started having an interest in lyrics of Tamil film songs only after I read this novel (Anyone recalls “Irupathu nilavugal nagam engum ollividum; illamayin kanavugal vizhi oram thirai yidum”?). The title of the novel also entered our language – we used it whenever we reminiscenced about good old days….
